“Research in thoracic surgery helps us provide invaluable care to patients suffering from lung or esophageal diseases and gives them the hope of overcoming their illness. Our donors and supporters help our researchers make these dreams come true.”
Established in 2004, the Foundation celebrates 20 years of fundraising activities in support of the cause. Over the years, the Foundation has reached many significant milestones of which it is proud. Looking to the future it continues to focus on supporting scientific development and medical breakthroughs.
The Thoracic Surgery Research Foundation of Montreal was created in 2004 by André Duranceau, M.D., and Pasquale Ferraro, M.D. with the precious support of the Minicozzi family. The Minicozzi family and Doctor Ferraro forged a close bond when Mr. Eduardo Minicozzi required a complex surgical procedure at the CHUM. This encounter forever changed their lives and the course of the Foundation’s history. View their touching testimony in the video below.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in both men and women in Canada. Our research focuses on developing new prevention programs, implementing more efficient screening methods and improving the efficacy of targeted therapy, while reducing risk, limiting patients’ recovery time and adding quality years to their lives.
Diseases such as cystic fibrosis and emphysema lead to severe respiratory failure that seriously impairs the quality of life of patients and threatens their survival. Close to a hundred patients are waiting for a lung transplant at the CHUM, the only institution with a lung transplant program in Québec. The Foundation offers unwavering support to the transplant program, helping patients receive the invaluable gift of lungs and a fresh new start in life !
Gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernias are just two examples of illnesses that cause swallowing disorders with sometimes serious consequences. Certain diseases are in fact early warning signs of oesophageal cancer, an aggressive malignant tumour with a poor prognosis. Only a multidisciplinary approach which includes prevention, early screening and minimally invasive targeted interventions have the potential to improve the results of therapy for these disorders !
The appropriate use of funds combined with a transparent and meticulous management approach are at the heart of our principles of governance
