THE HISTORY OF THE DIVISION OF THORACIC SURGERY

The Division of Thoracic Surgery at l’Université de Montreal was established over 20 years ago by a group of surgeons committed to providing the finest in clinical care, education and research in the field of Thoracic Surgery. To achieve its goals, it was necessary to create a proper academic environment and recruit highly trained thoracic surgeons.

The Division went on to subdivide its activities into three well identified sections: thoracic oncology, esophageal diseases and lung transplantation, providing each of the sections with the framework required to meet its objectives both clinically and academically. In 1997, an integrated group practice plan with its own research and development fund was created within the Division. The objective for the surgeons in the group was to invest in their own development and place the emphasis on recruiting new academic surgeons.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF OUR FOUNDATION

The Thoracic Surgery Research Foundation of Montreal was the brainchild of Dr. Andre Duranceau and Dr. Pasquale Ferraro. The doctors along with the Minicozzi family came together to form a Foundation that would focus on the need for clinical care and research in the areas of lung transplantation, thoracic oncology and diseases of the esophagus. The bond between the Minicozzi family and Dr. Ferraro began in 1997 when Eduardo Minicozzi became gravely ill and required a surgical intervention at the CHUM. Please watch to his testimonial” in our “Real Life Stories” section.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to sustain the development of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at l’Université de Montreal to help create the proper environment necessary in the recruitment of academic thoracic surgeons with an expertise in the field, which ultimately will help them support and maintain their role as leaders in the field of thoracic medicine.
