Montreal, May 31, 2015

On May 31st, at the Golf Metropolitain, the Thoracic Surgery Research Foundation of Montreal gratefully acknowledges the donation of $15 000 donated by the Caisse Populaire Canadienne Italienne, which will be dedicated to the development of its Ex-Vivo perfusion program.

The Ex-Vivo perfusion program allows the study of the grafts, improve the quality of the organs before transplantation, and increase the number of organs available, therefore, reducing the risk of the transplant and the number of deaths of patients on the waiting list. In addition, it opens the door to fundamental research at the leading edge in pulmonary physiology, immunology and organ regeneration.

“The current results of lung transplantation are excellent,” says Dr. Ferraro. “With this acquisition, we expect to be able to increase by 20 to 25% the number of transplants, about 10 to 12 transplants per year. The impact for our patients would be immediate and considerable, says Dr. Ferraro. «In summary, thanks to the Ex-vivo perfusion techniques, it is possible to reduce the effects of ischemia on the grafts, to protect them for longer periods, correct cell damage and regenerate them.
The Ex-Vivo perfusion program will ensure the growth and development of the CHUM transplant program but also its long term success.
